Sequel to da vinci code movie11/25/2022 ![]() ![]() With Thanksgivings just around the corner, there are a lot of releases coming out this week. The Da Vinci Code led a large group of new releases, taking top spot on the charts with $11.05 million in rentals while it also topped the sales chart with ease. In the latter it took in $10.26 million for the week, less than $1 million above The Da Vinci Code's $9.35 million haul. There was a new number one this week as Ice Age: The Meltdown led both the sales and the rental charts. It was the clear winner after taking in $12.95 million during its first week of release, which was one of the best debuts of the year. This week that film placed second with a still impressive $10.71 million.Īward Season - Babel and Departed are Goldenĭecember 15th, 2006 Babel led the way when the Golden Globe nominations were announced today with seven nominations while The Departed was close behind with six.ĭecember 9th, 2006 Superman Returns led a group of four new releases, all of which placed in the top ten. There were a boatload of new releases to chart this week led by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest with $12.93 million, which was just a hair lower than Superman Returns's open week rentals from a week ago. ![]() While there's not a lot on the top, there's plenty of bulk, so much so we need a second page, which can be found here.ġ0 Million People Purchase Pirate DVDs This Week Also worth picking up is One-Eyed Monster on DVD, but that has a more limited target audience. The clear DVD Pick of the Week is Star Trek - The Original Series - Season One - Blu-ray, which is better than the previous HD DVD release. There are no first run releases that are must haves, nor are there are lot of smaller releases to pick up the slack. Looking at this week's list, that's not a huge surprise. In fact, it is arguably the weakest time of the year for DVD sales. We are about to enter the summer blockbuster season, which is great for box office numbers, not so good for the home market. Still not so slow that I didn't have to split this week's column into two parts, with the second part found here.ĭVD Releases for April 28th, 2009 - Part I On the other hand, no other release on this week's list came close to be a contender for that title, and overall it was a rather slow week. The cat returns dvd11/20/2022 ![]() ![]() He hasn't made a poetic film in the manner of his Ghibli mentors, but it's actually more polished in some ways than much of their work, especially in terms of movement. This movie exhibits a craft that belies Morita's inexperience as a director. The surreal feel escalates once Haru, the Baron and Muta flee into the royal maze and doesn't stop until a final, seemingly never-ending scream before the denouement. It's no surprise that the original Japanese voice actress for Haru, Chizuru Ikewaki, felt as though she spent most of the movie yelling.ĭarn,+where+are+my+party+guests? When the film moves to the Cat Kingdom itself, it feels like Haru in Wonderland, filled with courtly felines content with a monarch who alternates between surfer-dude cool ("Ciao, babe") and hair-raising lunacy. While Miyazaki and Takahata largely focus on quiet relationships, Morita emphasizes madcap action - for Haru's lacrosse save, animators used a slow-motion technique that would seem jarringly out of place in a Miyazaki film - and frantic situations. A more modern sensibility inhabits The Cat Returns when compared to other Ghibli works. Though Elwes provides the English voice, a few decades ago it could easily have been David Niven. Desperate to avoid a life of catnip and mice, Haru enlists help from the almost-Lilliputian Cat Bureau, led by the Baron and including the raven Toto (Elliott Gould) and a fat feline, Muta (Peter Boyle), also a returning character from Whisper.Ĭan+I+take+your+order.+sir? With his top hat, cane, coattails and dashingly aristocratic demeanor, the Baron comes off like a 19th-century League of Extraordinary Gentleman adventurer. Haru eventually finds herself "invited" to the Cat Kingdom for the rest of her existence. Turns out that the cat she saved is the royal heir, Prince Lune. ![]() While Haru puzzles over the matter for the rest of the day, word of her heroic deed filters back to the Cat Kingdom, which earns Haru a visit that night from a royal procession, complete with feline Secret Service agents to guard the Cat King (Tim Curry). Afterward, the cat stands on its hind legs, thanks the befuddled Haru and goes on his way. That last trait shows itself in the strongest way when she runs in front of a truck and uses her lacrosse stick to save a cat from becoming roadkill. Seventeen-year-old Haru (Anne Hathaway) starts the movie as a typically teenager, harried, prone to oversleeping, gossiping, fawning over boys and acting impulsively. Baron Humbert Von Gikkemgen (voiced in English by Cary Elwes), a cat statue come-to-life who provided some sage advice to Whisper's heroine, helps another girl in The Cat Returns, but in a more visceral role. It's probably no coincidence that The Cat Returns follows up on a character from Ghibli's only other non-Miyazaki/Takahata movie, Whisper of the Heart. The Cat Returns feels more contemporary than other Ghibli productions without losing the fundamentally high quality that sets the studio's work apart from other anime. Novice director Hiroyuki Morita proved to be a wise choice. ![]() ![]() Hayao Miyazaki or Isao Takahata directed every Ghibli theatrical feature but one prior to 2002, and studio officials wanted to broaden the company's talent base. But while anime purists will no doubt seek out a subtitled print, the starry alternative has its moments - most of them supplied by Elliott Gould's chatty raven, Tim Curry's crafty royal and Peter Boyle as the ultimate fat cat.The Cat Returns is a new movie from Studio Ghibli not only in terms of chronology, but also direction. Given its distinctively Oriental flavour, it's a pity the dubbed version contains such US slanguage as "busted", "babe" and "jerk". Haru can hardly refuse, but she wishes she had when she begins sprouting ears and finds herself facing an arranged marriage to the pussy prince.ĭirector Hiroyuki Morita may lack the delirious imagination of Ghibli founder Hayao Miyazaki, but his Lewis Carrollesque fantasy still takes some deliciously bizarre turns on the way to a stunning finale high above the rooftops of contemporary Japan. Not only can her new feline friend talk he's also the son of the Cat King, who insists she come and visit his tabby realm. Japanese teenager Haru's adventures begin when she stops a moggy from becoming road-kill at a busy intersection. But The Cat Returns is still an enchanting, magical fable with a twisted vein of surrealism that makes you wonder exactly what they're smoking over there in the Land of the Rising Sun. Their latest effort about a teenager's dreamlike visit to a feline kingdom can't quite match the invention of 2003 Oscar-winner Spirited Away. Computer animation may have taken Hollywood by storm, but traditional line-drawn toonery is alive and kicking in Japan thanks to anime giant Studio Ghibli. ![]() How many mins is the movie spy11/19/2022 ![]() ![]() ![]() Not that they tackle every aspect of their film quite as skilfully. But Feig and McCarthy pull off these empowering tricks with deceptive ease. And it’s just as difficult for a comedy to be packed with farcical silliness while still making us care about its heroine’s career frustrations and romantic yearnings. It’s difficult for a comedy to present its heroine as a dowdy innocent who is childishly excited about travelling to Paris and Rome, while also presenting her as a quick-witted professional who can foil an international conspiracy. He, Aldi and Bradley are essentially James Bond distilled into three separate characters – the fighter, the seducer, and the suave socialite – and Susan outclasses them all. Susan can even hold her own against the film’s two most hilariously obnoxious characters: Rayna, who delivers toxic insults with the condescending serenity of a duchess at a village fete, and Jason Statham’s Rick Ford, a manically intense hardman who can’t stop ranting about his macho exploits. And she may have an unrequited crush on Bradley, but when a libidinous Italian colleague, Aldi (Peter Serafinowicz), makes a move on her, she is more than capable of resisting his oily charms. The CIA may disguise her as a frumpy geek with 10 pet cats, but she comes up with her own glamorous alter ego soonenough. She may vomit colourfully over an enemy agent, but not until she has defeated him in hand-to-hand combat. For all of McCarthy’s expertly performed pratfalls and faux pas, the film is careful to balance its jokes about Susan’s lack of confidence with reminders that she is, nonetheless, far more competent than Johnny English and Maxwell Smart ever were. But what’s exhilarating about Spy is that it treats Susan with respect and affection. With only a few days to stop Rayna selling a nuclear device to a Chechen terrorist, it’s Susan’s chance to get away from her desk and into action.Ĭonsidering Susan’s inexperience, as well as McCarthy’s gift for self-humiliating physical comedy, it seems as if she’ll make a mess of her mission, like the heroes of countless Bond spoofs before her. The comic chemistry between the vain superspy and his lovestruck Girl Friday is sparkling, and the contrast between his martini-sipping escapades and her call-centre drudgery could have sustained a fine Hollywood comedy on its own.Įverything changes, though, when a big-haired criminal mastermind, Rayna (Rose Byrne), uncovers the identities of the CIA’s active agents – another Skyfall echo – making it impossible for Bradley to catch her unawares. Personally, I would have been happy if Susan and Bradley’s situation had carried on like that, too. ![]() As she tells her friend Nancy (Miranda Hart, the British star of Call the Midwife), her job isn’t quite as thrilling as the one she dreamt of when she joined the CIA, but she is so shaken and stirred by Bradley that she is willing to stay in a dingy basement office while he is out hotwiring speedboats. While a dapper Bond-alike, Bradley Fine (Jude Law), is out despatching bad guys at swanky parties, Susan is keeping a high-tech eye on him back at the Agency’s headquarters, and feeding him information via his earpiece. McCarthy plays Susan Cooper, a CIA agent whose duties aren’t much more energetic than Moneypenny’s. ![]() Half life 3 screenshots11/19/2022 ![]() ![]() The scripted sequences maintain flow by keeping the player immersed in the game, whereas cutscenes in other contemporary games had often been a diversion from previous segments of gameplay. This constant experience of the game allowed players to totally fulfill and customize, almost, the role of Gordon, whilst letting them know who they were playing as. Valve implemented other factors to heighten the feeling of immersion, such as preventing the player from seeing or hearing their own character, who remains a silent protagonist throughout the game, and ensuring that the player rarely loses the ability to control Gordon, even during monologues. This differed from games at the time, making Half-Life distinct, as well as defining conventions that would last for years to come. Two of the intended results of this style of presentation were to increase immersion and to maintain a contiguous narrative that keeps the player's interest throughout. These sequences range from the introduction of major plot points such as the Resonance Cascade to bringing the player into a particularly difficult part of a level. ![]() The game tells the story by flowing into scripted sequences that are integrated as part of the game rather than as cutscene intermissions. However, the most distinctive aspect of the game is not the plot itself, but rather the way it is presented to the player. Valve’s in-house writer and author, Marc Laidlaw, who wrote the books Dad's Nuke and The 37th Mandala, later developed and expanded the plot. Half-Life's plot was originally inspired by the computer games Doom and Quake (both produced by id Software), Stephen King's novella The Mist, and an episode of The Outer Limits called " The Borderland". Ultimately, Gordon uses the cooperation of surviving scientists and security officers to work his way to the mysterious Lambda Complex, where a team of scientists teleport him to the alien world Xen, where he must destroy the Nihilanth, the creature keeping Xen's side of the dimensional rift open. Throughout the game, a mysterious figure known as the G-Man regularly appears, apparently monitoring Freeman's progress. The game is set during May 200- in a remote area of New Mexico, USA at the Black Mesa Research Facility a fictional complex that bears many similarities to both the Los Alamos National Laboratory and Area 51.Īs Freeman tries to make his way out of the ruined facility to find help for the injured, he soon discovers he is caught between two sides: the hostile aliens, and the Hazardous Environment Combat Unit, a military force dispatched to cover up the incident - including eliminating Freeman and the rest of the Black Mesa Science Team. After an experiment that goes horribly awry when an unexpected Resonance Cascade (an apparently completely fictitious occurrence) rips dimensional seams that devastate the facility, Gordon must fight to escape the now alien-infested facility as creatures from another world - known as Xen - subsequently enter through these dimensional seams. Gordon Freeman, a recent MIT graduate in theoretical physics, and also a recent employee at Black Mesa. In Half-Life, players assume the role of the protagonist, Dr. ![]() ![]() Up until now he’d been, at best, bumming around Earth because he had nowhere else to go and still wanted to surpass Goku, but this is true heroism.
